Pikkujoulu or ‘little Christmas’ is a traditional Finnish party held at the beginning of December in anticipation of Christmas. The party was a great opportunity to bring together current students, alumni and staff and to celebrate the autumn’s achievements. The party included hot glögi, a seasonal Finnish Christmas drink made by Riina and a range of vegan treats from Aslihan, CS Alumni and founder of My Dear Kitchen Helsinki. There was also the opportunity to decorate gingerbread and to make homemade Christmas cards from recycled materials- in true creative sustainability fashion.
Earlier in the day we also had the chance to listen to three brilliant CS masters thesis presentations and to attend a lecture by CS Alumni and Umeå PhD Candidate, Nicolas B. Toretta. Nicolas’ lecture titled: “Anti-oppressive and decolonial design for sustainabilities: whose design, whose sustainability?” considered the importance of design in giving choice and empowerment and viewed the role of the designer as one of constant reflection.
