First year Creative Sustainability students Anna Svartström, Caroline Mellberg and Ekaterina Perfilyeva from design, architecture and business have joined the Global University Climate Forum held in Paris on December 5, 2015 dedicated to the COP21 summit.
The forum, coordinated by International Sustainable Campus Network and International Alliance of Research Universities, gathered almost one hundred participants – students and sustainability officers from over 20 universities in Finland, Australia, the UK, France, Denmark Mexico, Singapore, China, the USA, Russia and Germany.
The forum kicked off a year long involvement of students in doing sustainability projects for their campuses, cities and local communities. At the event, each university team presented their project to fellow students and the expert panel of professors and sustainability professionals.
Anna, Caroline and Ekaterina have been inspired by their work during the Systems Thinking course in the beginning of their CS studies this year. The task was related to drafting creative solutions for Aalto University’s future campus to contribute to the goal of creating Finland’s most sustainable campus by 2020. Their project, under the working name of Water Scarcity, seeks to quantify sustainability of food production and consumption on campus. The students hope to educate Aalto community on wiser food choices according to the resources such as water and energy spent on each meal offered on campus restaurants.
There were altogether 27 projects presented at the forum. The students and experts exchanged opinions and feedback and will stay informed with each other’s progress via the global platform that will be launched soon. Our Aalto team will continue to develop their project further in the coming year. If you’re interested, follow the project’s blog here.
